Storybook Phonics

A story-based approach to phonics practice helping children to read with confidence.

A story-based approach to phonics practice helping children to read with confidence.

Each CD-ROM contains a number of engaging stories, with each story featuring a different target sound. CD-ROM 1 contains 12 stories, focussing on CVC words for ages 4-5. CD-ROM 2 contains 9 stories, focussing on consonant clusters for ages 5-6. CD-ROM 3 contains 9 stories, focussing on long vowel sounds for ages 6-7.

  • The 'talking stories' are attractively illustrated and animated to motivate pupils.
  • Stories are supported by fun, interactive games which give pupils the opportunity to develop blending skills for fluent reading, and to practise segmenting skills for accurate spelling.
  • Ideal for independent and pair work on computers, Storybook Phonics is also suitable for whole-class work, using an interactive whiteboard.
  • Printable teacher's notes are provided for each activity, along with cross-referencing to NLS documents, to save planning time.
  • The stories are also available as children's books - an ideal group reading resource.
"Comprehensive teacher notes, PiPs and NLS cross-references and recordkeeping sheets add real value to the product, turning it from just another interactive storybook into a valuable teaching tool."

ICT for Education

"The children loved this program. They enjoyed being independent learners and quickly learnt that they could achieve phonic success. The ability levels allowed both for support for the less able and adequate challenge for the more confident. Very soon the children were reading the stories independently, with the sound on low for support."

The CD-ROMs are numbered 1, 2 and 3. Does this refer to the year group?

No. Broadly, CD-ROM 1 is for Foundation (ages 4-5), CD-ROM 2 is for Year 1 (ages 5-6) and CD-ROM 3 is for Year 2 (ages 6-7). However the stories lend themselves to a wider audience and are suitable for older children.

The font isn't aligned properly in some of the stories. Why might this be happening?

A problem with the font is most likely to be due to your user access. Follow these steps to correct the problem:

Double click on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop
Double click on the 'Local Disk' icon
Double click on the 'Windows' folder
Right click on 'system 32' folder and choose 'properties'
Click on the 'security' tab
Tick the box that says 'full control'
If you are unable to tick 'full control' then you will need to speak to your system administrator, who will have control of your user access.
